WORLD CUP 2026 HOSTING BIDS

In view of the 2007 policy that any country may bid for a World Cup, provided that their continental confederation has not hosted either of the past two World Cups, countries from Asia and Europe were eliminated for this bid. Two bidders applied to host the 2026 World Cup, Morocco and a joint bid by Mexico, U.S.A. and Canada, under the title 'United'. Originally the three 'United' countries were considering bidding separately, however in October 2017 they announced their joint-bid. Voting was done on the 13 June 2018 by the two hundred and three eligible members of the 68th FIFA Congress being held in Moscow, Russia. Since there was only two bidders, the election was simple, with the bid receiving the most votes winning the hosting. The 'United' bid received one-hundred and thirty-four votes and Morocco received sixty-five votes. Cuba, Slovenia, and Spain abstained from voting, Iran voted 'none of the bids', whilst Ghana was ineligible to vote as it was suspended by FIFA due to a corruption scandal.

FIFA is once again organizing the football World Cup, a competition which joins all the national teams in the world in trying to qualify for the final stages of the tournament, which then crowns one nation as the World Champion - the current World Champions are Argentina. The 2026 edition will be the 23rd edition of the competition. The first edition of the World Cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay but a lot of European nations boycotted the competition on the grounds that it was not being held in Europe (football's birth place) and due to the long distance to travel by sea to arrive at the hosting venues (at least a month travel).

Since that edition the competition was held every four years with the exception of the 12 year period (1938-1950) of the Second World War. For the first nine editions (1930-1970) the price was the Rimet Cup, named after the father of the competition - Jules Rimet. The 1970 edition was won by Brazil for the third time and therefore they secured the Rimet Cup for ever. Since then a new cup was made - the FIFA cup.

This will be the first time that three countries will be hosting the World Cup together: Canada, Mexico and U.S.A. The only other edition hosted by more then one country was 2002 which was hosted by two countries: Japan and South Korea. This edition will also be the fourth edition hosted in the Central / North American continent, the third time for Mexico (1970 & 1986), the second for the U.S.A (1994) and the first for Canada. However it will be the first time for Mexico and U.S.A. to host an edition with others instead of hosting it alone. This edition will return to be played in the summer period after the last edition was played in the winter months due to the high summer temperatures in Qatar. Europe is the continent with most hosted editions - eleven editions (1934, 1938, 1954, 1958, 1966, 1974, 1982, 1990, 1998, 2006, 2018), the second most continent to host the World Cup is South America - five editions (1930, 1950, 1962, 1978, 2014), Central & North America hosted three editions (1970, 1986, 1994), Asia hosted two (2002, 2022) and Africa one edition (2010). The only continent that never hosted a world cup is Australia.
